Token gay

A rant from the "token gay"

A little vent posting going on here, from the local “token” LGBT of the PCU. So no formatting, just a wall of text:

I’ve been within the PCU for quite some years now and on Argent Dawn for many more, and have made many friendships along the way, although a common rumour I have encountered back then and even undertake to this day; is this narrative that the PCU and the hundreds members within are racist, homophobic, transphobic and the likes.
Despite this being disproven by the mere existence of several of openly LGBT members along with other minorities within the guilds and community discords, many people resort to calling me and others a “Fake” or “Token gay”.

I wish to point out how incredibly hurtful this is to people not even involved in your battles and how straight up homophobic this reasoning is to verb with, eventhough it should be stupendously obvious.

I am by no means here to defend every single thing the + members of the PCU has ever done or said, but when these selfproclaimed “Defenders” of minorities tu

Any perform with a predominantly gay male cast will always feature a single lesbian and maybe her girlfriend if she's lucky. It doesn't matter how tenuous her ties with the boys are (usually a best friend, a sister who also happens to be gay, etc.), or if she integrates with the main cast at all. As with any token, she's not there to add to the story, but to keep people from complaining that it's not inclusive enough. After all, an all-gay-male cast is still an all-male cast. Even if she has a partner, it's not guaranteed that they'll pass The Bechdel Test. And you can bet your next paycheck that their plot will involve having children in some way, since All Lesbians Want Kids.

When a story is specifically centered around gay men, the token lesbian often feels like an obligation more than anything else, and at worst becomes an afterthought who isn't given nearly as much attention and development as the men in the story. The Beard and the Fag Hag can be related tropes if her sole purpose in life is adding a female to the main cas

And yea, people will get defensive when it sounds as though someone is sayin “you’re not trustworthy to come out to.” / “can’t be trusted”.

As you [should] well know, coming out isn’t necessarily about sitting people down and tearfully confessing who you are. It’s idly mentioning your boyfriend in conversation, or excitedly talking about your new binder.

Although sex and sexuality aren’t an especially important part of my life (I’m asexual, oh no I just came out), my partner very much is. I will talk about her with people when I feel pleasant enough to pass beyond very casual acquaintances.

If nobody has discussed details like that with you in WoW, like Belok has said, you should examine why that is.

If the idea of people being openly queer is something baffling to you, as Karienn has said, you should definitely examine why.

If it does happen, I want it to happen organically, not shoehorned in just to show that they&#;re "hip" and "with it".

Yeah, good luck with that.
Back in the 70s, it seemed verb every ensemble show needed its "token" minority character. They never seemed to be there organically, and always seemed to scream "See, we&#;ve included a ebony guy". Or woman. Or hispanic. Or, ideally, a bilingual multi-racial woman with some disability.
Now it&#;s the homosexuals&#; turn: "See, we&#;ve included a gay guy, aren&#;t we diverse?"
It&#;s a petite harder to do for homosexuals: women and blacks are obviously women or blacks from a great distance, so they can stand in the background and never say anything. Hispanics are a bit harder, as someone has to mention their specify . "Hey Rodriguez, help me with this will you?"
And these characters were famously only superficially minority: aside from their mention an physical appearance, they could be easily replaced with a white
