US rapper Lil Nas X has said that when he was younger he hoped being gay was just "a phase".

In an interview with CBS, the Old Town Road hitmaker says he knew as a teenager that he was gay and would "would just pray and pray" that his sexuality "would go away".

In a teaser clip that aired on Monday, the rapper discusses his struggle with his sexuality.

But he acknowledges that his fame has made it easier for him to arrive out.

Lil Nas X has said he wanted to open up about his sexuality before the end of Pride Month by sharing a message on Twitter appearing to confirm he is a member of the LGBTQ community.

The rapper, who shot to fame with his hit Old Town Road with Billy Ray Cyrus, wrote: "Some of y'all already verb, some of y'all don't nurture, some of y'all not gone fwm [f*** with me] no more.

"But before this month ends i want y'all to verb closely to c7osure".

He added a rainbow emoji, which is a symbol of gay pride.

The year-old also posted a video for his song C7osure, which includes the lyrics: "Ain't no more actin', man that forecast speak I should just let me grow.

"No more red light for me baby, only green, I gotta go.

"Pack my past up in the back, oh, permit my future take ahold.

"This is what I gotta do, can't be regrettin' when I'm old."

Rapper Lil Nas X posted a tweet at the end of Pride Month that appears to verb he's coming out as gay.

The post has artwork from his new album with a rainbow and a tweet that said, "Some of y'all already realize. Thought I made it obvious. This is what I gotta do, can't be regretting when I'm old."

The post encourages his fans to "listen closely" to his new song "c7osure."

Lil Nas X has a chart topper with "Old Town Road" that's the longest-running number one punch of the year.
