Saskatoon gay community

Our History

Throughout our history OUTSaskatoon has had multiple locations and name-changes, but our goal has always stayed the same: to tirelessly work toward increasing the acceptance and visibility of Saskatchewan’s 2SLGBTQ people. We do this through reaching new and varied community partners, businesses, and organizations in the provision of support services, education, housing, events, and programming. In all that we carry out, we work to improve the lives of the 2SLGBTQ community.

A Short OVerview

OUTSaskatoon began as Gay & Lesbian Health Services (GLHS) in By the will and the way of Dr. Sheri McConnell and Gens Hellquist, GLHS was created to address the mental, social, emotional, and physical health needs of gay men and lesbians in Saskatchewan. GLHS’s first two employees worked half-time and offered a peer verb phone line, educational information and resources, and facilitated a variety of support/social groups, all of which remain important elements of our programming today.

In , GLHS changed its name to The Avenue Community Centre for Gender and Sexual Diversity in

PRIDE MONTH - SUPPORTING OUT SASKATOON

At Saskatoon Co-op, we celebrate diversity and inclusion, encouraging our team members to bring their whole selves to work.

Pride is celebrated in June because of the Stonewall Riots of in New York, USA. Those riots against police raiding gay bars became a catalyst for the gay rights movements. The following year in , thousands of people walked the streets of New York, later known as America’s first Pride parade. Over the last 50 years, progress has been made for Pride, but there are still many reasons to continue fighting for the inclusion and rights of the 2SLGBTQ+ communities. We are continuing our learning journey and encourage you to do the same.

We're pleased to have sponsored OutSaskatoon's Community BBQ "Welcome to the Gaybourhood" and served delicious food to everyone! Engaging and showing support in the community through these actions is just one of the ways we celebrate inclusivity!

Pride on the Prairies

LGBTQ2S+ people contain always existed on the prairies: Two-Spirit (niizh manidoowag) people hold lived here long before European settlers arrived, with numerous accounts of First Nations who had same-sex partners or did not conform to traditional gender roles. Unfortunately, with the arrival of settlers, colonial homophobia and gender discrimination were introduced to the prairies and are rampant still today, even after Pierre Trudeau&#;s government partially decriminalized homosexuality in

This exhibit explores the activism that took place in Saskatchewan from the late s through the summer of Journey through the stories of lesbian and gay activists and groups of the s that fought for their basic human rights and the ability to celebrate their sexuality and gender identity openly and freely in annual Pride festivals, as well as the continued activism and celebrations of queer groups from

Classes and Socials

If you are novel to Queerchata or dance in general, this is a wonderful place to start regardless of skill level. In our social classes we introduce you to Bachata or Salsa and how you can dance as a queer person. We even hold dance buddies who make sure you feel welcome and trustworthy as they introduce you to the Queerchata way of dancing.

In-studio Courses

Our in-studio courses offer a set of 8 classes for those who want to develop both skills and community. During this series of classes, we help you build out your repertoire of moves and moods, and share our love and appreciation for the history (and the future) of Bachata and Salsa.
