Pride in Spartanburg: Foremost Spots for LGBTQ Visitors
The Municipality of Spartanburg is a surprisingly progressive retreat in Upstate South Carolina. Since welcoming the first Upstate Pride March at Barnet Park in , Spartanburg has flourished with local businesses and community organizations embracing the LGBTQ+ community.
Upstate Pride Week is celebrated each November, with additional Pride events hosted during National Pride Month in June. Checkout the Upstate Pride calendar for the most current happenings.
Crystal Pace, Pinnacle Hospitality Group Vice President of Sales and Marketing , said the most comforting thing for an LGBTQ visitor is to know when they’re in Spartanburg, they’ll be welcomed, and treated the same as anyone else.

For eight years, Spartanburg's only gay bar - the Cheyenne Cattleman's Club - has operated in a building as hidden as the lives of the people who go there. The small, tan-colored structure off Asheville Highway has drawn little attention from drivers who passed by on the busy road. Most club members at the bar, like much of Spartanburg's gay and lesbian community, prefer to keep a low profile and hide their homosexuality to the outside world. They have mostly gone unnoticed - until last week. When Spartanburg County Council passed an anti-gay resolution - in chambers just a mile away from the bar - this segment of the Spartanburg community was thrust into the local and national spotlight. Recently, members of the club visited over beers, played video games and talked about the resolution County Council rescinded four days after approving it.
