Our list of the Best LGBTQ+ Movies of All Time stretches back 90 years to the pioneering German film, Mädchen in Uniform, which was subsequently banned by the Nazis, and crosses multiple continents, cultures, and genres. Gay cruising and its geography in cinema and documentary
The idea for this list grew out of discussions after I rewatched Goodbye, Dragon Inn () and a suggestion from David Conner. My interest is in films where cruising forms part of the plot (rather than just incidental background), with a particular interest where the film focuses on the geography or architecture where the cruising occurs, in addition to the rituals of cruising. Films are listed alphabetically.
I have not included narrative films/documentaries where the cruising happens in the context of sex work or hustling. Gary Needham is curating a excellent list for those films at Movie Trade: Hustlers and Male Sex Work in Cinema and Documentary. Acknowledging that cruising has moved online for many men, I have not included films about online cruising, which need a seperate list.

Despite being an independent genre in itself, cinema has always shown a ready inclination towards other arenas of art; characterized by being a close depiction of life and all its realities, cinema has forever been willing to spread its roots and draw inspiration from the fields and various offshoots of literature, fine arts and social dynamics. The element of homosexual depictions in Indian cinema might as well be said to be grounded in these prominent domains of human creativity and expression to a certain extent, if not in their absolute totality. The question of homosexuality or same-sex intercourse having existed in India and in what develop can be said to be answered if one turns to three definite sources: images on temple walls, sacred narratives and ancient law books. The thought and notion of what is sexual and what is not, change with the variation of place and time, per se.
