Photographing LGBTQ+ couples as a straight, cis wedding photographer
As a straight, cisgender wedding photographer I am extremely grateful and proud that a number of LGBTQ+ couples have trusted me with their weddings, engagements and love stories.
Showcasing these couples’ photos has earned me more LGBTQ+ wedding bookings for the upcoming year, which Im pumped about.
Working with LGBTQ+ couples has been an unbelievable part of my business. I have been intentional about showcasing their images. I often fetch comments from people of all sexualities and genders, saying it’s refreshing to see a wedding photographer’s commitment to inclusivity. Not just in this realm, but other kinds of diversity, too.
In this article, I wanted to take a bit of a philosophical view about how I make couples who identify as LGBTQ+ feel safe, welcome and validated. I also want to go into a little of the backstory, philosophy and my personal journey.
Am I always unfaltering in my attempts? No, but I am always learning and getting better at asking thoughtful questions while respecting boundaries.
How d Intimate Wedding in Saint Paul | Kevin & Pete
I have to admit, I am living for these intimate weddings! Kevin and Petes wedding taught me that every single wedding day is beautiful, no matter the circumstances. There can be rain, snow, sleet, civil unrest, or a global pandemic; nothing could terminate these two from tying the knot. I was originally a little nervous to shoot Kevin and Petes wedding photos. This was my first gay wedding. However, Ive known this couple for a long time now, and Ive shot wedding photos for countless couples before. Ultimately, I knew this would be no different. Ive had other photographers ask for advice when it comes to shooting gay couples wedding photos and here it is: Its literally no different.
Posing and shooting a same-sex couple is exactly the identical as every other couple. You can just use the taller person to take the traditionally male poses or just flip back and forth of who takes what traditional part of the pose.

As we waited for the cue from our photographer, the past 10 years of our relationship flashed before our eyes. When we turned around, it was a rush of emotions. We cried and held each other—both thinking, ‘She looks even more beautiful than I imagined.’”

Best LGBTQ Wedding Photos from NYC and Beyond
Here are some of my favorite LGBTQ wedding photos from over a decade of documenting queer love stories in New York City and around the world. I originally began this photo roundup on June 26, —the historic day that same-sex marriage was legalized in all 50 U.S. states. Each year, I continue to add new moments that remind me why this work matters so deeply.
To photograph LGBTQ weddings is not just my job—it’s a calling. Its the privilege of my life to document this chapter of our collective history, and to witness the radiant love, intimacy, and joy that comes with both personal and political liberation. There’s an extra layer of celebration at queer weddings—a fierce kind of joy born from struggle, resilience, and finally, recognition.
This post is dedicated to every couple who invited me into their world, and to the generations who fought for the right to love freely and visibly. It’s also for those who didn’t live to observe marriage equality, but paved the way with courage and conviction.
Happy Pride Month.
