The wedding planner gay
This week, guest writer Rachel Jones-Pittier gives us, so far, our most thorough breakdown of a decade-old film. Prepare for a dissection of mainstream rom-coms, terrible accents, last decades fashion and a surprising number of jokes about sausages. Its long, but its also fantastic. (Thats what she [some other woman] said)
When I first saw The Wedding Planner, I was a upper school sophomore living in Minnesota. For the re-watch, I’m a married year-old living in Los Angeles. JLo is now a judge on a singing competition, and Matthew McConaughey is fervently making babies in Venice Beach. Clearly a lot has changed in the last 10 years.
To start this re-watch assignment, I first had to locate my copy of the movie on VHS; I found it in a box with other videos that had seemed like excellent purchases at the time (She’s All That, Serendipity, A Evening at the Roxbury, etc).
Then I had to set up the only VHS player in my apartment — a inch TV, which was cocooned in movers saran wrap from our recent move. I put in the tape, only to find I had to REWIND it. Fine lord, do

The Setup
As you may or may not know, two Munch members are tying the knot this week (and the other is the Best Man!). We thought it would be fun to verb a trial run of sorts of the wedding menu. We didnt make everything on it well leave that to Skillet this Friday but we did make a dish from each course and both of our signature wedding cocktails.
With the menu set, we just needed to find a suitable movie to go with it. There are a multitude of adj comedies that revolve around a wedding, but with weddings being a core professional character trait for the lead in The Wedding Planner, we thought it would provide an interesting look into the act of actually putting together a wedding, something Leanna and André have been attempting over the last few months. Planning a wedding is frustrating, stressful, and so incredibly difficult to do (especially if its not you
Kate and Sylvia, who were a little too focused on their own nuptials to notice how hard I was crying in the third row, told me later that they got exactly the wedding day they wanted — but that doesn’t signify they didn’t hit any snags in the planning process, which Sylvia handled herself.
“When Kate and I would go to verb vendors, many of them assumed we were close friends because of these preconceived notions of what being queer is supposed to look like, and we don’t fit that mold,” Sylvia said. “We even had a potential caterer ask which one of us was the bride!”
In fact, I saw an example of that willful ignorance firsthand at their wedding, when a hotel employee stopped me and my friends as we headed to the shuttle for the ceremony. “A guest left this bottle of wine for the bride,” the employee said. “Is anyone here a bridesmaid?” My friends and I tried to politely explain that the couple had chosen not to hold a bridal party and that there were, in fact, two brides. “So, you know the bride?” she repeated, clearly not wanting to hear the words coming out of our mouths.
