Many women find this question unthinkable but according to Bonnie Kaye, M.ED., an specialist in women married to gay men, it is estimated that 4 million women have been, or are, married to gay men. The use of symbols and colours is an important way for groups to convey messages, communicate with others, and to build a visual identity. During the 1970s, LGBTQI+ people were encouraged to appear out and, in doing this, they often wore badges with distinctive symbols, reinforcing the faith that no longer would they be invisible. Many Americans refrain from talking about sexual orientation and gender identity or expression because it feels taboo, or because they’re afraid of saying the wrong thing.

This glossary was written to help provide people the words and meanings to help make conversations easier and more comfortable. LGBTQ+ people use a variety of terms to identify themselves, not all of which are included in this glossary. Always listen for and respect a person’s self identified terminology.

Ally | A term used to describe someone who is actively supportive of LGBTQ+ people. It encompasses straight and cisgender allies, as well as those within the LGBTQ+ community who support each other (e.g., a lesbian who is an ally to the bisexual community).

How Do I Know If I Am Gay? Signs You Are Gay

Particularly when young, some people may ask, "How do I know if I am gay?" if they have conflicting sexual feelings. When it comes down to it, there is no reliable "Am I Gay test", so the only way to know that you are gay (definition of gay) is to look within yourself to decide your own thoughts and feelings towards others of the adj sex. You might also wish to consider the possibility that you are neither gay nor straight and are bisexual or just curious.

Signs You Are Gay

There is no one way that gay people act or verb – gay people are just as diverse as straight people. Just because you are a man who is effeminate or a woman who is boyish, that does not mean that you're necessarily gay. So don't fall into the trap of thinking that your clothes, hair or attitude determines your sexuality.
