This is our gay Negombo guide with everything the gay traveler needs to know about visiting this city in Sri Lanka.

Negombo is the gayest place in Sri Lanka.

This small, unassuming fishing town, just 35km (23 miles) from the capital Colombo, has grown to become a sort of liberal haven in what is a very conservative country.

Let’s get one thing straight…if you’re coming to Sri Lanka looking for big gay Barcelona Beach-style Circuit jamborees or those Palm Springs White Parties, you’re going to be a little bit disappointed. When it comes to a gay scene and LGBTQ+ rights in Sri Lanka, it’s all very much underground thanks to the country’s anti-gay law. Society is still super conservative, and being openly gay here is not encouraged.

Negombo, however, has managed to become a sort of pink oasis, with several adult-only hotels subtly targeting the LGBTQ travel community and even a few queer-friendly spaces to hang out. Just remember that we say this in the context of what is a very conservative country.

An almond-shaped island dropping south of the subcontinent and into the Indian Ocean is the independent nation of Sri Lanka. Located southwest of the Bay of Bengal, Sri Lanka holds a key position in pan Asian, African and Oceanic trade routes and yet remains inexplicably under-travelled. Promising all of the allure of South Asia, with less chaos and fewer crowds than India, Sri Lanka is a dream destination for anyone searching for something different. Its beaches are on par with Thailand’s; its prices pleasingly low and its unique flavours deeper and more beguiling with every meditative breath. A paradise of many colours with 2, years of history, Sri Lanka can say stories of colonial rule and ancient Hindu kingdoms, to the backdrop of tropical tea plantations and lofty rainforests which climb to misty unknowable heights. Explore the breadth of Sri Lanka, from its lush tea country to the opulent game viewing of Yala National Park, taking in strik

My first trip to Sri Lanka has brought with it some very exciting blogging opportunities, and the first of these was a really luxurious treat and welcome to this amazing land. I was invited to be the first blogger to attend and review the beautiful Dickman Resort - an adults only, luxury resort which has been hailed the first gay-friendly accommodation of its kind in the country. I was thrilled to be invited to somewhere so forward thinking and all-accepting, and couldn't wait to see what the visit had in store. In the heart of Negombo, the resort is ideal for anyone just arriving or about to fly out and the staff pride themselves on giving the very best welcome or farewell to Sri Lanka. As we pulled up to the resort we were given the warm Sri Lankan welcome as we were invited inside with fresh passionfruit juice and a tour of the property, before being seen to our room and told to relax and enjoy. Our room, the Purple Suite overlooked the pool area and gave us a lovely view across the courtyard while still being tucked away neatly to provide as much privacy as we wanted.
