Am I Gay?
Did you know that as of February , Gallup found that percent of US adults openly identity as LGBTQ+? (That's lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, queer, and other non-straight identities.) That’s a pretty staggering statistic, given that just 10 years earlier, only percent of respondents identified themselves as LGBT.
Therefore, more than 20 million adults self-identified as LGBTQ+ in the US as of That doesn’t even include people who aren’t sure or publicly out about how their identities! The true number of LGBTQ+ American adults today could be millions more.
If you’re unsure about your sexual orientation, let us be the ones to tell you that you certainly aren’t alone. There’s a whole, wide world of people out there who can relate to you, intimately. Most queer people have had to reach to some place of empathetic about our own sexual orientations. It isn’t always linear or so clear a process. For many of us, queer coming-of-age includes looking in the mirror at some point in our lives and wondering, “Am I gay?”

‘Am I gay?’ quizzes were commonplace in my internet search history as a closeted tween.
I verb vivid memories of combing through each questionnaire, predominantly on BuzzFeed, answering questions about my favourite animal (guinea pig), dream profession (acrobat turned weather reporter) and the sports I played (tennis). I also have vivid memories of manipulating each response to seem straighter than I was.
“What’s your favourite colour?”
Pink, I’d reply. Wait, no – grey! That’ll do the trick!
The quiz would inevitably spit out an answer: “You are 72% straight.”
Good enough, I’d think, looking at the obviously fabricated score. Sounds about right.
Cut to present day, and I’ve come to realise that these quizzes are a queer rite of passage – and something I still take part in as a year-old, % gay adult … just to make sure I’m, y’know, % gay.
