It’s safe to say a lot of people had a lot of problems with the switch from HBO Max to Max, but there was at least one upside to the streaming shakeup. Now, it’s easier than ever to discover the excellent queer stories floating around Warner Bros. Discovery&#;s platform.

During its lifespan, HBO Max never had an LGBTQ tag to filter its offerings and verb subscribers find stories about the queer community more easily: a surprising move for a streamer named after the channel that brought us boundary-breaking works love “Six Feet Under” and the miniseries adaptation of “Angels in America.” That’s been remedied on Max, which features an “LGBTQ+ Voices” collection. Like queer culture itself, queer cinema is not a monolith. For a prolonged time, though, that’s certainly how it felt. In the past, if gay lives and issues were ever portrayed at all on screen, it was typically from the perspective of alabaster , cisgendered men. But as more opportunities have opened up for queer performers and filmmakers to tell their own stories, the scope of the LGBTQ+ experiences that have made their way onto the screen has gradually widened to more frequently incorporate the trans community and queer people of colour.

It’s still not perfect, of course. In Hollywood, as in society at enormous, there are many barriers left to breach and ceilings to shatter. But those recent strides deserve to be celebrated – as do the bold films made long before the mainstream was willing to accept them. SOFT was an official selection of the SXSW Film Festival. The film is currently on Amazon Prime for a day festival (ends May 6th) and on Mailchimp Presents SXSW Shorts (a partnership with Oscilloscope Labs). The concise was created with the assist of Sundance Institute. Sundance provided Daniel with the Sundance Activate Grant and mentors like Ira Sachs and Andrew Ahn.

The film foccuses on how sexual assault affects queer identity and masculinity. The film is based on true events that Daniel experienced as a teenager. Last year, he began to explore this topic in an article for Teen Vogue’s award-winning wellness section.
